Who knew that the merits of exercise never end? In a new study, men who engage in high-intensity workouts, when they’re in their teens or young adulthood, benefit from a greater bone density by the time they reach middle age. Vigorous activities such as jogging and high-energy sports can boost bone mass in the hip as well as the lumbar region. These activities aid in keeping bone diseases like osteoporosis away.

Exercise Everyday, keeps the Osteoporosis Away

While osteoporosis is most commonly associated with women, the risks are just as high for men. Necessary precautions need to be taken, by both genders, to be protected from diseases of the bone. Dr. Pamela Hinton, an associate professor in the department of nutrition and exercise physiology at the University of Missouri-Columbia College of Human Environmental Sciences, told WebMD:

“While osteoporosis is commonly associated with only postmenopausal women, it is, in fact, a serious issue for men as well. Indeed, research has shown that the consequences of osteoporosis can be much worse for men, as they are less likely to be diagnosed and are at a greater mortality risk from fractures that occur as a result of a fall.”

Dr. Hinton’s study covered 203 men, aged between 30 and 65, who had varying levels of physical activity. It was found that those men who had participated in load-bearing and strength-training exercises, when they were younger, had much better bone density. However, the report also reported that high-impact activities, at any age, can strengthen men’s bones. Though activity at an early age is known to have more advantages.

Activity can be started at any age, as long as you are healthy. Revisit your exercise pattern to include strength training and high-energy workouts in your schedule. Your bones will thank you for it later!
