Who would have thought that dividing child care duties with your spouse could result in a great sex life? Yet, a study conducted by researchers at Georgia State University, showed that couples who co-parent their children equally, enjoy a better sex life.

Who should take childcare responsibilities?

The study was conducted on 487 heterosexual couples, and reported that problematic sex lives were primarily reported by those couples in which the woman took on most of the responsibilities. The study split respondents into 3 categories: the first where the woman did 60% or more of the childcare chores, the second where the responsibilities were divided evenly, and the third where the man did most of the chores. The researchers also took into consideration other factors such as relationship quality by evaluating satisfaction and conflict levels.

IBTimes reported the study’s lead author, Dr. Daniel L Carlson, as saying:

“One of the most important findings is that the only childcare arrangement that appears really problematic for the quality of both a couple’s relationship and sex life is when the woman does most or all of the childcare.”

The results revealed that in relationships where the woman takes on most of the work, lower sexual satisfaction was reported. While it was found that the second and third groups enjoyed as much sex as each other, men who take on most of the work reported a lower satisfaction level. Conversely, their partners’ satisfaction levels were higher.

Researchers are wary about the relevance of the finding and feel that further research needs to be undertaken in order to validate the finding. They are still exploring the reasoning behind it. In the meanwhile, splitting chores doesn’t seem like a bad idea after all if it means a better sex life.
